Humanoid robots just keep getting more and more technologically advanced. Of course, we are the ones making them that way, but it won’t long before they start doing it on their own.

As has been pointed out numerous times here and countless other places, our increasing development of artificial intelligence (AI) and humanoid robots is probably going to lead to the end of humanity. For which we will have literally no one to blame but ourselves.

Earlier this week, it was explained that researchers recently discovered that most large advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models will lie when pressured to achieve their goals. In another study that was shared in February, researchers discovered AI systems “may develop deceptive or manipulative strategies without explicit instruction.”

And yet, here we are teaching advanced humanoid robots like Unitree Robotics’ G1 how to be incredibly agile, performing side flips and kip ups for the first time ever. Why? Good question.

“One year after Unitree H1 (1.8m) pioneered the first standing backflip by an electric humanoid robot (March 2024),” the company wrote in the description a video of their robot doing a side flip. “Meet the Unitree G1 – now flawlessly conquering an even more challenging standing side flip. (Zero malfunctions/damage occurred during programming and filming.)”

Alan Bradley, tech journalist for Live Science, spoke to Unitree about the new capabilities being shown by their G1 humanoid robot. He reported that they were able to accomplish these goals mainly by upgrading the artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm it uses to make the software faster and more responsive and that “the side flip was performed under reinforcement learning training.”

It is this reinforcement learning training that has been used to teach humanoid robots how to also do things like disarm a baton-wielding opponent and perform Tai Chi moves.

“This fresh, newly captured video from Unitree’s testing grounds showcases the breakneck speed of humanoid intelligence advancement,” the company wrote in the description of the G1 doing a kip-up. “Every day brings something thrilling!”

Yes… thrilling. That’s certainly one way to put it.
