For the first time in conference history, dating back nearly three decades, the SEC will have co-champions of its conference softball tournament. Four-time defending national champion Oklahoma will share this year’s SEC Tournament crown with top-seeded Texas A&M after weather prevented them from playing Saturday’s final in Athens, Georgia.
Thunderstorms terrorized the area throughout the day, and similar weather is forecast for Sunday, although it wasn’t as if the SEC or commissioner Greg Sankey seemed to put much effort into getting the game played.

“Oklahoma and Texas A&M have been declared co-champions of the 2025 SEC Softball Tournament after the Championship Game was canceled due to inclement weather at game time and predicted for the remainder of the day,” the conference said in an official statement.
“The decision was made in an abundance of caution for the athletes of both programs as they prepare to travel home before strong storms approach the area later today and begin preparations for the 2025 NCAA Division I Softball Championship.
“Oklahoma will serve as the Conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament.”
The Sooners secured the automatic qualifying spot by virtue of being the top seed in the tournament and, thus, the top remaining seed at the time of cancellation. But college softball fans were less than pleased at the decision.
Imagine preaching “it just means more” than declaring co-champions instead of waiting out the rain. https://t.co/aoFLMR90Hx

Sharing a win is a lot like kissing your sister.
Ridiculous. https://t.co/bFN2GilW3P

Co-champions of a conference tournament?
Would love to see how contract money, bonuses, etc deal with this. https://t.co/WA1XQOkX3V

Both Texas A&M and Oklahoma will qualify for the Women’s College World Series. So it’s not like the Aggies got completely screwed or anything. But it’s just an undeniably lame way to end the tournament and a disservice to fans of not only both teams, but the sport as a whole.
