Miami Marlins rookie infielder Ronny Simon had a forgettable night on Tuesday in an 8-6 loss to the San Diego Padres. The second baseman committed three errors in three innings.
After the fact, he was seen breaking down in tears on the field before exiting to the locker room. He was replaced in the fifth inning, ending his unfortunate outing.
Simon has become a fan favorite in Miami. He was called up earlier this season after spending seven years on the minor league circuit. He hit .354 across 15 games in Triple-A this year, forcing the Marlins to consider him for a Major League role. He’s since been a notable contributor for the organization.
Simon’s appeared in 19 games. He’s hitting .234 with five RBIs. He’d entered his most recent contest sure hands, committing only one error on 28 chances. His defensive abilities escaped him in San Diego.
Ronny Simon committed 3 errors in a matter of 3 innings…
And it was originally four before a scoring change awarded Xander Bogaerts a single on a botched effort from the middle infielder. The miscues started in the second frame. He misplayed a groundball, which trickled into the outfield, then tried to do a little too much.
Simon fired an errant throw home. It sailed to the backstop allowing a runner to come around to score. The struggles continued in the fourth inning where he committed both a throwing and fielding error on back-to-back plays. He was visibly upset.

The second baseman was seen crying in the infield. He was removed from the game after the inning ended. Teammates tried to console the dejected rookie to keep spirits high.

Starting pitcher Max Meyer did his best to calm Simon down following the miscues. “I just talked to him,” he said after the game. “I told him, ‘I know you’re not trying to do that behind me. Keep your head up…’ It’s baseball at the end of the day and I’m not going to hold anything behind him.”
Even a few Padres felt bad for Simon. “It’s baseball, it happens,” said Fernando Tatis. “[Everyone] has those nights… I definitely know he’s a great player.”
The extra outs helped San Diego overcome an early 6-0 deficit to win the game. Ronny Simon did help the Marlins grab that early lead with a first-inning RBI single before his defensive meltdown. The Marlins and Padres will face off again on Wednesday. We’ll see if Simon is in the starting lineup.
