The Nebraska baseball team picked up a huge win over No. 16 Vanderbilt over the weekend while taking part in the MLB Desert Invitational. There was scary moment near the end of that contest that led to a gruesome scene on the diamond.

Cornhuskers pitcher Tucker Timmerman was struck in the face by a line drive comebacker traveling faster than 100 MPH. He immediately fell to the ground in pain.

Blood poured from the pitcher’s head as medical staff rushed out to the mound. Unbelievably, he was able to get up and exit the field under his own power.

Rather than go to the hospital, Timmerman remained with the team throughout the final inning. Nebraska picked up a 6-4 win, leading to a celebration on the baseball field.

The reliever opted to join in on those festivities, taking part in a postgame photo where he proudly displayed his battle scar. He refused to let the injury keep him down.

Tucker Timmerman was later taken to Omaha for an evaluation. It turns out he fractured a bone near his left eye and could be in line for face surgery. With that said, he’s expected to return this spring with the possibility of wearing a shield still on the table.

Against the Commodores, he completed 2.1 innings of work, allowing one run on two hits while recording a strikeout. He played a pivotal role in the Cornhuskers’ upset victory. It was only fitting that he was able to celebrate with his teammates after the fact.
