Veteran NASCAR Cup Series spotter Tab Boyd is no longer listed as the spotter for Hyak Motorsports and driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for this weekend’s race at Pocono. Boyd, who has over 10 years of Cup Series experience and a Daytona 500 win on his resume, was under fire after negative comments about Mexico City during last weekend’s race in the city.
In a since-deleted post on X, Boyd decried the amount of crime in the city and seemed to insinuate that he had been pickpocketed outside of his hotel.
“I’m ready to go home, screw this place,” he wrote. “People can talk it up all they want… can’t even walk out the front door of the hotel without getting hustled and money snatched… in less than five minutes. Good area my a–…”
#NASCAR… Clayton Hughes is now listed as the spotter for @StenhouseJr and the No. 47 @HYAKMotorsports Chevrolet for this weekend’s race at Pocono — instead of Tab Boyd.

Hyak Motorsports did not address the tweet. But when NASCAR released its team rosters for this weekend’s races in Pocono, Boyd was no longer listed as a member of the team. Instead, Clayton Hughes, who spent several years spotting for former series champion Martin Truex Jr., is listed as Stenhouse Jr.’s spotter for the weekend.
Boyd isn’t the only one dealing with negative fallout from comments about Mexico City. Spire Motorsports driver Carson Hocevar was fined $50,000 by the team after he referred to the city as a “s—hole” during a Twitch live stream. Hocevar walked back the comments and apologized even prior to the fine.
NASCAR Driver Corey LaJoie Calls Out Spotter Tab Boyd Over Mexico City Comments
In the latest episode of his “Stacking Pennies” podcast, former Cup Series driver Corey LaJoie addressed both Boyd and Hocevar’s comments.
“What really makes me scratch my head, or grinds my gears, is when competitors within the league criticize or are in that group of people that kind of want to see an experiment or adventure fail,” LaJoie said.
LaJoie didn’t address Boyd directly. But later comments made it pretty clear who he was addressing.
“If you find some guy in the street saying that they can swap your dollars out for pesos on the sidewalk, [it’s] probably not the thing to do, and then you probably shouldn’t fire up Twitter and tweet about it.” he said.
BroBible.com has since reached out to Hyak Motorsports regarding Boyd’s status with the team. We will update this story as more information becomes available.
