Virginia University of Lynchburg football player Jeremy Butler shared a troubling story about his time with the program on social media this weekend after wrapping up Year 1. Within that recap was a jab at his old head coach.

Butler didn’t hold back when discussing his stint with the college football team. He’s now asking for help after feeling wronged.

Virginia University of Lynchburg is a private Christian university about two hours outside of Richmond. Its football team, the Dragons, competes at the NCCAA level alongside other Christian programs. Success has been hard to come by at the school.

VUL won just one game a year ago. That was one game worse than a 2-8 campaign in 2023. Butler was on the field a lot for the Dragons.

The defender played in seven games, tallying 22 tackles, a sack, and two blocked kicks according to the NCCAA stat book. He produced on the field but was living a nightmare away from it.

Jeremy Butler transferred from JUCO with the promise of a full-ride scholarship. He claims to have been given an ultimatum on that offer, needing to agree to the terms of the deal before even seeing campus.

Butler did agree. He played his first year with the Dragons as a significant contributor. Things soured after Season 1.

The defensive back talked about a few issues he experienced while on campus in a detailed post on social media. He ripped the head coach and the school in the process.

“VUL was one of the few schools that offered me a full scholarship,” he wrote. “Which meant I could go to school for free… [VUL] gave me a deadline: sign within 7 days or lose the offer.”

He signed quickly given that ultimatum before arriving to campus in August. It wasn’t what he’d expected.

“As for football? There was no real program. Coach Tim Newman brings in a new staff and recruits a whole new team every year – with the same disappointing results. We won only one game that season, and it was against a prep school. The trainers didn’t care. I played the whole season on two sprained ankles.”

Butler then went onto say that he was told to pay for his tuition the next semester. There was a dispute involving his full ride scholarship. He’s now asking for help in the form of a sports lawyer.

The defender took his first steps in moving on this week. He was granted a release from his athletic obligation by the school. He’s marketing his abilities online in hopes of receiving another scholarship opportunity elsewhere.

Butler will now look to finish strong with a new college football team. He wasn’t happy with how things turned out a Virginia University at Lynchburg. Hopefully, his next school can provide a positive change.
