Plenty of people take psychedelics to enhance their experience while taking in some nature. That includes a couple of hikers who ate some shrooms during a visit to the Adirondack Mountains and ended up having a rough trip that led to them calling 911 to mistakenly report the death of a friend who was not, in fact, deceased.
It can be difficult to fully grasp the appeal of psychedelic drugs unless you’ve experienced the effects for yourself, and while they certainly aren’t for everyone, many of their proponents would point to the eye-opening nature of mind-altering substances liked LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in “magic” mushrooms) that have a tendency to put life in perspective.
You certainly don’t need to trip to enjoy an excursion into nature, but if you play your cards right, you can be treated to an incredibly enhanced experience where the sights and sounds you take in are vividly elevated and you develop a hard-to-define connection with your surroundings.
According to the Adirondack Explorer, a couple of people who recently made the trek to Cascade Mountain just outside of Lake Placid in upstate New York were likely hoping to take advantage of those side effects when they ingested some mushrooms for a hike on May 24th.
However, they ended up having the textbook definition of a bad trip, as they called 911 to report the death of a friend who’d joined them in the Adirondacks before a forest ranger was dispatched to the site where they said the body was.
Things took a turn when the ranger arrived on the scene and spoke with the two hikers, who admitted they were lost during a conversation where the official quickly determined they were in an ” altered mental state” stemming from the shrooms they admitted they had consumed.
The ranger was also able to determine the person who had purportedly died was still alive after calling them to confirm that was the case, and they were eventually escorted back to their campsite while their buddies were taken to an ambulance where they were also greeted by the New York State Police (it doesn’t appear any charges were filed).
You’ve got to love a story with a happy ending.
